Officials junk calls for snap polls By Edmund Sestoso
TWO ranking officials in Negros Oriental junked calls by several groups for a snap election to resolve the raging political conflict in the country involving the continuing leadership of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Governor George Arnaiz and Vice Governor Jose Petit Baldado, in separate interviews, said the calls for a snap polls has no legal basis unless circumstances and events would be beyond constitutional restrictions and control.
Baldado explained that only legal minds could determine whether the process could be legal or illegal.
The vice governor said people have the basic right to demand for change in the form of government.
Baldado, however, did not dismiss claims by several sectors that the calling for the President to step down has been increasing.
"With the continued rallies and demonstrations, political events both in the national and local level are unpredictable," said Arnaiz.
The governor said the call for a snap election by members of the Hyatt 10 was more based on vested interest than for the good of the country.
