Group chides solon on Arroyo visit report By Jimmy P. Abayon
A CONVENOR of the anti-Arroyo "No More Gloria" group reprimanded 3rd district Representative Herminio Teves over the latter's displeasure on how the national media, particularly GMA-7 projected the image of Negros Oriental during the recent visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the province.
Ronald Ian Evidente, also head of the Kilusang Mayo Uno in the province, brushed aside Teves' misgivings saying the congressman's statements were normal "for a well-accommodated congressman of Malacañang."
Evidente said in a capsule, the pro-Arroyo leaders only wanted to assure the President that Negros Oriental had no anti-GMA forces and had adopted the palace's alleged dictatorial stand towards the media.
In fact, Evidente said, anti-Arroyo groups did hold a lightning rally and chant "Gloria pekeng pangulo!" when the President toured the Buglasan booth area.
The national network according to Evidente captured on camera the brief scuffle between the members of the Presidential Security Group and some of the 15 Anak Bayan and League of Filipino Student protesters.
"There is no reason for Teves to accuse the national media of projecting a bad image for Negros Oriental...it is their job to capture the event," the anti-Arroyo convenor said.
Moreover, he described as laughable the third district representative's insinuations that "a congressman" was behind the lightning protest and that GMA-7's 24 Oras program was doctored by dubbing the anti-Arroyo chants.
In a hastily organized press conference on Thursday, Teves said the national media report was a "slap" on him and Governor George Arnaiz in their efforts to promote Negros Oriental.
The third district representative said he never heard the chant when he accompanied the President's tour of the Buglasan booths.
Teves said that instead of highlighting the anti-Arroyo lightning rally by a few people, the national media should have given more weight on the reason for the President's visit.
During the press conference, Teves showed to the local media a portion of GMA-7's 24 Oras program that featured the lightning rally.
He said his business friends in Metro Manila were alarmed by the image projected by the media, saying it could make them hesitant to invest in the province.
