Guv says China visit fruitful By Maricar Aranas
* Governor George Arnaiz says that even if the ethanol plant would be realized as planned, the Provincial Government would pursue its reforestation project in Tamlang valley
GOVERNOR George Arnaiz described as fruitful his recent visit to China early this month. Together with him on the trip were Negros Oriental third district Representative Herminio Teves and Provincial Board Member Henry Pryde Teves.
The highlight of the China trip was visits to that country's rich agricultural areas and bio-ethanol plant, which Negros Oriental plans to build in Tamlang valley.
Arnaiz said the plant that produces ethanol using yellow corn has helped save 90 percent of China's gasoline use.
He explained that yellow corn could produce more ethanol if based on tonnage but sugar cane could outweigh that if based on hectarage.
Arnaiz said sugar cane would be more convenient to Negros Oriental because farmers here are used to it.
The governor stressed that even if the ethanol plant would be realized as planned, the Provincial Government would pursue its reforestation project in Tamlang valley.
He said residents of Tamlang valley would have to be consulted before the ethanol plant be put in place to assure them that they benefit from the project because they would be planting the canes to be used to feed it.
The proposed plant would be a joint project of the National Development Corporation, the Sy family, Herminio G. Teves Corporation, and the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental.
