Cha-cha to perpetuate same people in power
By Maricar Aranas

FORMER National treasurer Leonor Magtolis-Briones warned the proposed Charter change by the Malacañang-appointed Constitutional Commission (ConCom) would only perpetuate the power of the same people in government Sunday.

Briones issued the warning at a recent forum on the Philippine political and economic situation at the Silliman University audiovisual room.

The former keeper of the nation's purse strings said that if indeed the national leadership wanted Constitutional changes, it must first reform the country's leaders.

She said changing the Charter would remain ineffective if corrupt government officials continued to hold power.

The ConCom would only be a waste of people's money, Briones pointed out.

She said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had invited her to join the commission but that she declined for "personal reasons."

Akbayan Partylist Representative Loretta Rosales who was also invited to the forum shared the former national treasurer's sentiments.

Rosales described the composition of ConCom lopsided because it was not people-centered.

The process, Rosales said, was only a game of the rich and those in power to continue to manipulate the people.

The other speakers at the forum were Dr. Michael Alba, dean of the College of Business Economics of De La Salle University and Nepomuceno Malaluan of the Action for Economic Reforms.

The forum was sponsored by the History and Political Science Department of the College of Arts and Sciences of Silliman University headed by dean Carlos Magtolis, Jr.
