Farmers ask environment office to lift suspension
By Edmund Sestoso

AN ORGANIZED farmers group in Negros Oriental appealed to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to lift its suspension of the Community-based Forest Management Agreement (CBFMA).

The agreement authorizes farmer-beneficiaries or organizations to act as stewards of a public land, carry reforestation activities, and plant crops to support their needs.

DENR Secretary Michael Defensor, however, issued a memorandum last August 12 suspending the program for reasons unknown to the beneficiaries.

Officers of the group Nagkahiusang Magbabaol sa Publikong Yuta sa Oriental Negros (NAMAPYON) handed a letter to Vice President Noli De Castro during his visit to Dumaguete City last Thursday to intercede with the DENR.

NAMAPYON is a provincial federation of farmers groups mostly from the cities of Bayawan and Bais and the municipality of Mabinay.

The farmers were beneficiaries of more than 10,000 hectares of public land under the CBFMA.

They said that even before it was suspended, the program had not been fully implemented.

The farmers hoped their petition would reach President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
