More Negrense men aware of RH role By Jimmy P. Abayon
MALE participation on reproductive health in Negros Oriental might still be far from "being ideal," but more of them have become aware of their role on the issue, said provincial population officer Jeanette Villarubia.
Villarubia made this assurance during Friday's male forum on reproductive health at Plaza Ma. Luisa Suites Inn in Dumaguete City.
The population officer said most of the men where those in the seven reproductive health program pilot areas of La Libertad, Ayungon, Manjuyod, Zamboanguita, Dauin, Siaton, Bayawan City, and Tanjay City.
"The men from these areas now know that they have to be empowered," Villarubia said.
The forum was held as part of the province's observance of Population Development Month.
It brought together 20 police men, presidents of the associations of barangay captains, members of Sangguniang Bayan health committees of 20 municipalities, and representatives from non-government organizations.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Jonathan David Flavier of CMEN, a nationwide movement on reproductive health for men, discussed non-scalpel vasectomy.
Congressman Emilio Macias II discussed with the participants reproductive health and family planning issues.
Villarubia said some of the participants were not new to reproductive health trainings.
"This (the forum) is just to orient them and make them move on as allies and partners on reproductive health," she explained.
Meanwhile, apparently alluding to the Catholic church's suspicions, the Commission on Population appealed to leaders of faith-based groups to tolerate people's conflicting views and opinions on issues of reproductive health.
POPCOM asked the leaders to allow their members access to "medically-safe and legal and ethical options" in family planning.
