Bais City holds unique Christmas celebration By Syril G. Repe
BAIS CITY, Negros Oriental -- The City Government is celebrating a month-long Christmas with unique activities lined up to make the season memorable to children and senior citizens.
Bais City is known throughout the province for the tallest Christmas tree, drawing visitors from all over Negros Oriental.
Aside from this year's usual highlights that include the switch-on ceremony Monday night for the 70-foot tall Christmas tree, Mayor Hector Villanueva announced free ice cream for children and cups of brewed coffee for senior citizens.
Speaking to more than 2,000 people gathered at the Hermenegildo Villanueva Plaza, Villanueva said he was dedicating the city's annual celebration to the children and the senior citizens so that they would feel the spirit of Christmas in this time of economic crisis.
A huge almost-toy like train has been put in place beneath the tree to carry children for a joy ride.
"Naggama mi ug train sulod sa plaza para sa mga katawhan nga maksakay usab sila, diin ang Bais aduna usab niini nga maoy gigamit karon sa CAB pagkuha sa tubo," the mayor said.
Bais City Councilor Gerry Teves, director general of the Christmas celebration program, said this year's decorations cost only P500,000 compared to last year's P1 million.
Teves said the city used last year's undamaged Christmas decoration last.
The activities at the plaza include a barangay presentation every night, a live band performance from a group in Cebu City, and fireworks on Christmas and New Year's Day.
