Fil-Am student gunned down By Syril G. Repe
POLICE are still investigating the death of a 29-year-old Filipino-American student of Silliman University who was killed by a lone gunman dawn Thursday in front of the Sierra residence along EJ Blanco in Barangay Piapi.
Police identified the victim as Joel Hamoy Canon, single from New Jersey, USA, a student of Silliman University, and residing at the men's dormitory on campu.
Dumaguete City chief of police, Chief Inspector Manuel Hidalgo said that based on investigations that before the incident, Canon was at Rizal boulevard and was involved in a commotion.
Hidalgo did not elaborate.
From the boulevard, the Fil-Am student went to El Camino Blanco and spent time there before leaving the night spot around 2:30 that morning on a motorcycle.
A witness who refused to identify himself said another motorcycle followed Canon and on catching, fired on the victim several times hitting him on the chest, stomach, and back.
Responding policemen found a bottle of beer beside the victim's body and recovered three caliber .45 shells and a slug.
Meanwhile, in the same hour, a 52-year-old was killed when the bicycle he was riding was hit by a motorcycle in front of the used clothing stalls in Villa Amada along the national highway in Barangay Daro.
Police identified the victim as Arturo Jusep, single, of Barangay Bantayan and the suspect as Michael David, 20, single, a resident along the highway near St. Paul University.
The collision hurled both Jusep and David into the paved road.
David escaped after the mishap but was arrested by the police when he went for treatment at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.
Jusep died less than an hour after he was brought to the hospital.
