8 athletes receive cash incentives By Syril G. Repe
EIGHT athletes from Negros Oriental who joined and won gold medals in the recent 23rd Southeast Asian Games received cash incentives from the Province of Negros Oriental through Governor George P. Arnaiz Wednesday morning at the Office of the Governor.
In a brief message to the athletes, Arnaiz said he was proud of their performance and for contributing their skills to win medals in their respective events.
The cash incentives, he said, seek to honor the athletes and recognize their performance.
"Ato nga taga-an ug pahalipay ang mga athletes aron usab kadtong mga taga Oriental Negros nga mahilig sa Sports maaghat sa pagpaningkamot sa pag-aapil sa nagkadaiyang mga pa-ugnat sa kusog aron usab mahilikay sa guinadiling drugas," Arnaiz said.
The eight Negros Oriental athletes were Marestella Torres of San Jose Town, a gold medalist in long jump women's individual received P20,000; Jenifer Chan of Dumaguete City, gold medalist in Archery-compound team event and silver medalist in Archery-compound individual, received P25,000; Joan Chan of Dumaguete City, gold medalist, archery-compound team event, received P 15,000; Mark Javier of Dumaguete City, gold medalist in Archery received P15,000; Maridel Manaban of Pamplona town who captured two gold medals in the Dragon Boat Race (team events-500m sprint and 1000-meter sprint received P30,000; Joey Barba of Dumaguete City, silver medalist in Mountain Bike-down hill individual, received P15,000; and Michael Jorolan of Dumaguete City, silver medalist in water polo team event received P15,000.
Marestella Torres, the first long jump gold medalist from Negros Oriental, said she was happy for the support of the government through Philippines Sports Commission, the Provincial Government, and other agencies for supporting their training for their events.
"Dako usab nako nga pasalamatan ang akong pamilya sa ilang suporta kanako", Torres said.
