Truck rams tree, kills 1, injures 69
By Neil C. Rio

SEVEN sugar workers, one in serious condition, are recuperating at Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City after the Isuzu cargo truck they were onboard crashed into a mango tree in Sitio Layawan, Barangay Atabay, Ayungon, Sunday noon.

The workers were on their way to the Mendieta hacienda in Tanjay City when the incident happened.

At around 7:00 Sunday night, Elver Alunan, 18, single of Barangay Mabato, Ayungon died. His legs and head were crushed during the accident.

Meantime, 69 other passengers were injured. Most of the wounded were treated at Bindoy District Hospital.

Mendieta E. Inunciaga of San Jose, Tanjay City owned the cargo truck and it was driven by Florentino Villacarlos, 37, of the same place.

The hospitalized workers said the cargo truck fetched them Sunday noon for work the next day at the Mendieta cane plantation in Tanjay City.

One of the workers said at about 2:00 in the afternoon, the truck loaded with 70 people and firewood was speeding along Sitio Layawan, Atabay, Ayungon, when its brake faltered and it lost control, hitting a mango tree.

The impact cut the tree. The broken trunk fell into the truck causing it to fall on its side, pinning the passengers.

The driver voluntarily surrendered to the police.
