ACSAT entry wins innovation award

ACES Traiblazers of Asian College of Science and Technology (Acsat) in Dumaguete City topped the 3rd Oriental Negros Innovation Awards (Onia) 2005-2006 and received the grand prize of P50,000.

The final awards was held at Foundation University last February 16 to 17.

The team's innovation, automated rice seedbed protection, uses sensors to regulate heat and moisture in a seedbed that creates an environment conducive to the growth of the seedlings.

The project was a collaborative effort of Lou Gallego, team leader, Ritchel Baldado, and Susan Ofamin, under the mentorship of Engineer Jasmin Bala.

ProTek's Watchdog 24 won second place and P25,000. The wireless security system innovated by the team from the Silliman University, monitors the status of a site for 24 hours and reports and event to the user or persons pre-assigned within two to three seconds through a text message.

Third place and P10,000 went to e-Ureka's iKard, a service-based customized prepaid card for single use that provides access to order products from the internet and eliminates the waste of unused balance. The product was a collaboration of students from SU, Acsat, and Spud.

Awarded honorable mention were: M-Web, the team composed of students from Norsu, SU, and USJR that innovated the Mos Trap, a device to trap mosquitoes, and SIE, the team from Foundation University that innovated charcoal briquettes, a smoke-free, higher heating fuel with longer longevity and lower residual ashes that ordinary charcoal. Both teams won P5,000 each.

The judges were Jay Bernardo, AIM professor and a multi-awarded CEO; Mohan Kulkarni, TeleTech's vice president for business development and CEO of FinSource, a subsidiary of TeleTech; and Richard Cruz, AIM professor and consultant.

Since it started three years ago, ONIA is run by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and funded by the Provincial Government through the Business Development Foundation and the one-IPC, with the support of the TVB Group and higher education institutions in Dumageute City.
