Abaca production up 35% By Maricar Aranas
ABACA production throughout Negros Oriental went up by 35 percent last year following the expansion of areas planted to the fiber.
Nena Locsin, chief of the Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) in the province, said the increase were mainly due to hiked production in Negros Oriental's northern towns from Guihulngan to Sibulan.
The increase was registered in the production of loose fiber, which is in demand by pulp or paper mills including paper-making factories nationwide.
She said the cost for loose abaca fiber has increased from P70 a kilogram, farmers price, to P77.
Locsin said the increased price has prompted the fiber agency to expand abaca farming with the help of the provincial government through the Abakahoyan program.
Capitol allotted P500,000 to the program.
The program encourages farmers to inter-crop abaca with other crops.
