Mayor says no to hired killers in crippling criminals

DUMAGUETE City Mayor Agustin Perdices does not favor using hired killers to eliminate criminals involved in the spate of snatchings, hold-ups, and other crimes hitting the city.
But, he is open to having suspects caught in the act of committing crimes crippled to stop them from continuing their activities.
Perdices admitted that his statement could elicit strong reaction from the Commission on Human Rights.
However, he said human rights advocates should think of it when they themselves become victims.
The mayor's reaction came following suggestions from "some quarters" to use hired killers and police disclosure that all 25 cellphone snatchers and hold-up suspects arrested in the past had been released and are again free to ply their criminal trade.
The court dismissed the charges against the suspects after their victims failed to pursue their complaints.
Perdices said the series of cellphone snatchings that based on police reports was happening almost daily, was giving Dumaguete City a bad image and discouraging tourists from visiting.
He noted that because of the victims' indifference, some snatchers and hold-uppers were turning to their activities for livelihood because of the "easy money."
But Perdices said his support of the idea to cripple suspects caught in the act of snatching and hold-ups would be up to the discretion of the new chief of police.
