Emergency rice stocks ready, says food agency
THE Provincial office of the National Food Authority says it has 65,000 sacks of rice at its disposal to meet emergency needs in Negros Oriental in case of calamities.
National Food Authority assistant provincial manager Francisco Lorico Jr. said as early as January, the agency has made sure enough supply is available for any emergency.
Lorico explained they have a mandate to maintain a 15-day buffer or 65,000 sacks of rice available at all times.
He said the provincial office could withdraw additional supply from Cebu food agency in case its buffer stocks were not enough.
Lorico said their office is one of the agencies, public and private, that are always on hand to serve communities during emergencies.
Governor George Arnaiz met with the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council last month to draft plans to prepare the province for any calamity.
Meantime, Lorico expects more people in the province would shift to rice this year because of poor corn harvest in the first cropping season.
He said some corn users normally switch to eating rice since corn prices increase during corn lean months.
NFA corn grits sell at P18.50 per kilogram and NFA rice at P18 at the moment.
