Ayungon beat La Libertad
By Syril G. Repe

AYUNGON, Oriental Negros -- Junril del Rosario of Ayungon made amends for his lackluster performance last week to rise to form in March 17's crucial match against La Libertad, giving the hometown crowd reasons to celebrate in the ongoing elimination round of the Governor Cup's Inter Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Ayungon quadrangle.

Del Rosario fired 6 points in the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter, raking a total of 17 points to lead his team to victory 79-73.

La Libertad's Felix Guitana scored 13 points of his 23 points in the fourth quarter but failed to narrow down Ayungon's lead in the dying seconds of the quarter.

Teammate Melvic Barron who had caused the ejection from the game of one of Ayungon's dribblers by virtue of a foul tried to carry his team through with his 16 points, 7 points in a slow ball game in the first quarter that tied their scores at 11-all, in the last 1minute and 20 seconds but to no avail.

The La Libertad team cut the lead of Ayungon team to just 3 points in the final 1minute and 50 seconds in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter in the face of a 69-66 scoreboard.

But Ayungon coach Jerome Jabel advised his players to go slow and play a good defense, an advise del Rosario exploited that seal his team's victory.

Ayungon municipal councilor and municipal sports coordinator Dennis Amancio described the basketball showdown 'heart-stopping'.

The game was officiated by BAP-accredited referees Richard Soreno and Lourdy Tan.

Meanwhile, Ayungon municipal councilor Nomer Ella, chairman of the Games and Amusements Board of Ayungon said different sports activities have been line-up for the fiesta celebration of his town.

The sportfest will include basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis and other sports tournaments.
