Police chief: Education is crime prevention
By Victor L. Camion

EDUCATING a child is one of effective crime prevention and the parents' contribution to prevent crime, said Negros Oriental Philippine National Police Provincial Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Buenafe spoke after the Dumaguete City Council passed a resolution commending the anti-crime Task Force 24 recently.

Majority of crime suspects, he said, were uneducated persons.

"They (crime suspects) have nothing to do with their lives, that is why they are involving themselves in crimes," he said.

Task Force 24 is an inter-agency law enforcement unit created by Governor George Arnaiz on February last year to curb crimes and stop professional jealousy among law enforcement agencies.

Buenafe said the commendation was a challenge and an encouragement to do more successful operations against crimes in Dumaguete City and the province.

One of the effective moves to fight crimes, he said, is to prevent it and one of the prevention strategies is community contribution.

Buenafe also expressed gratitude to the community.

He said the task force's operations have been successful because concerned citizens and officials in barangays and the city helped to report crimes and suspects.

The task force has been proven to be also effective against illegal drugs.

"There are different ways to help and not just by reporting suspected criminals. Also even disciplining your kids is one good way of preventing criminalities," said Buenafe.

He said the police could only do so much without the help of the community.
