Beach volley tourney definite on April 19-23 By Syril G. Repe
THE volley-cum-entertainment dubbed Beach Tourney will be held on April 19 to 23 at the Perdices Coliseum "where the beach sand will be made into a big court."
The tournament would feature five local teams and a still undetermined number of national beach volley teams.
The local teams include Tanjay City, Foundation University, Negros Oriental State University, Bayawan City, and Negros Oriental composition.
All the teams have national players who have joined national competitions and with proven track records.
Glynda T. Descuatan, co-chairman of the Negros Oriental Sports and Cultural Facilities Management Board, said the event is part of the province's April Sports Fiesta, which earlier also featured the Talk n Text-Red Bull fight of the out-of-town conference of the Philippine Basketball Association.
Descuatan said the beach volleyball is the province's first attempt to promote the beach sport.
"It will be open to the public at P5 minimal fee. There will be entertainment of bands, food, and wide screen for the Summer Beach Wear which would follow right after the noon volleyball tourney," she said.
The combined cash prize totals P58,000. Trophies will also be given. The champion will receive P20,000, the second prize winner will get P15,000, the third P10,000, fourth 5,000, and consolation a P1,000 prize for those in the 5th to 12th place.
Dumaguete City sports coordinator Joe Guirit said the tournament has the support and approval of Roger Vanzuela, chairman of the Philippine Volleyball Association and the Philippine Beach Volleyball Association.
