USA-Iloilo tops tourney By Syril G. Repe
UNIVERSITY of San Agustin-Iloilo's Krista Mari-Dolendo and Nerissa Bautista walloped Tanjay City's Tabio sisters in the final round to grab the championship of the 2006 first Oriental Negros All-Ladies National Open Invitational Beach Volley Tourney at Mariano Perdices Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Nerissa Bautista grabbed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy for a game well done after she and teammate Krista Mari-Dolendo demolished Tanjay City's Janelle and Daphne Tabios, 21-17, 21-19, for the championship crown and the top prize of P20,000 and a trophy.
As first-runners-up, the Tabios sisters received P15,000 and a trophy.
University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu City, steered by Machelle Matuquira and Juliet Marikit, knocked down University of San Jose-Recoletos-Bacolod City's Jeyy Torres and Christine Diono, 21-17, 21-12, to land on the second-runners-up spot and collect the P10,000 prize and a trophy.
University of San Agustin-Recoletos-Bacolod City ended third placers and the P5,000 prize and a trophy.
The Provincial Government of Negros Oriental through the Negros Oriental Sports and Cultural Facilities Management Board offered a combined cash prize of P58,000 and trophies for the winners of the four-day tournament, which saw some 12 competing teams from all over the Visayas.
