Guv to buy rifles in fight v. terrorism
By Victor L. Camion

GOVERNOR George Arnaiz has asked the Provincial Board to appropriate P4 million to buy 50 brand new AK-47 and M-16 rifles for the Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial office in line with its heightened campaign against terrorism.

Arnaiz requested the board to allot the money following an emergency meeting in his office Thursday last week with Provincial Police Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe.

During the meeting, Buenafe said the PNP was heightening its anti-terrorism drive but that the command lacked high-powered firearms.

Board members Arturo Umbac, Marcelo Adanza, Melimore Saycon Ernesto Tijing, Henry Pryde Teves, and Mariant Escano-Villegas attended the meeting.

Buenafe said the PNP Regional Mobile Group would be deploying additional 75 men to Negros Oriental to augment the provincial police force, which has been placed on alert against New People's Army offensives.

The police director told Arnaiz that second-hand high-powered firearms would do.

But, Arnaiz insisted on brand new rifles to make the campaign against terrorism and other crimes more effective.

Arnaiz said he would also ask officials of the 20 towns and five cities of the province to allocate fund to buy additional high-powered firearms for their police forces.

He said Capitol would offer a counterpart fund to the municipality or city that would allot money for new weapons.

Negros Oriental is the second most peaceful province in the country.
