School union holds strike vote By Victor L. Camion
THE Silliman University Faculty Association (Sufa) is scheduled to vote to determine if it would go on strike at the start of school year 2006-2007 in June.
Sufa filed a notice of strike last week before the regional office of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) in Cebu City against Silliman University (SU) for alleged unfair labor practices.
At least 287 of the total 364 rank and file employees of the SU belong to the union.
On the other hand, SU President Dr. Agustin Pulido said any decision to strike would be up to Sufa.
"That is their decision," Pulido commented during the inauguration of the overpass project along Hibbard Avenue in SU.
Pulido whose term expires next month said from its end, the administration would follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the SU management and Sufa.
"Sufa is asking about the CBA," he explained, adding, "The problem why the procedure is delayed has something to do with the computation."
Sufa President Victor Aguilan said the union would have to decide to go on a strike anytime in June if the administration failed to follow the CBA.
Aguilan, however, clarified that the union was still open to negotiations with the administration.
He said there is an improvement in favor of the union during a recent meeting with a representative of the NCMB.
Sufa's decision to strike followed the alleged failure of the SU administration to submit the additional documents for budget enrolment figures and tuition revenues to the union.
