Gov't agency to repair 15 irrigation projects By Rachel M. Nessia
THE National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will repair starting next month 15 communal irrigation projects in Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
The repair and rehabilitation project covers a total of 282 hectares of irrigated lands in Sta. Catalina, Mabinay, Siaton, Zamboanguita, Tanjay City, Amlan, and Bayawan City in Negros Oriental and 17 hectares in Datag, Siquijor.
Dexter Patrocinio, NIA provincial officer, said the restoration works would include the repair and improvement of canal and intake structures, diversion works, and construction of mini-intake.
NIA said the project would start next month once it received the funds.
NIA recently released some P499 million to 115 irrigation offices nationwide to speed up restoration works.
The project aims to attain the government's rice self-sufficiency by 2009 and generate 151,600 jobs mostly in contract works with irrigators' associations.
It hopes to restore the productivity of some 12,475 hectares of unserved farmlands and to benefit about 21,500 farmers across the country.
