Police to intensify anti-petty crime drive
By Maricar Aranas

DUMAGUETE City chief of police Deonardo Carlos will put in place what he described as a "more comprehensive plan" that would dig out the cause of the rising petty crime problem in the city.

Carlos issued this statement as he acknowledged that the rising number of petty crimes has become the city's leading peace and order problem.

He said that since assuming the city's top police post last March 1, he has noted that criminals were more aggressive and armed with knives, guns, and other weapons, particularly during hold-ups.

Carlos said he has also observed that hold-ups and snatchings were happening on daytime and in crowded places and the perpetrators have become elusive.

He said the plan would include sustaining the police's "choke points" and random checkpoints along the city's major roads.

Carlos lamented that most of the cases filed against arrested crime suspects are dismissed because of the victims' lack of interest.

He said he would also coordinate with the city jail warden so that the police would be able to monitor the movement of robbery and hold-up suspects that had been arrested and detained and released.

Carlos explained that the coordination was necessary since most of the arrested and then released suspects end up in the streets to commit the same crime.

He cited the case of Adin Remollo who was released from police detention last February but was arrested again Wednesday last week in Barangay Looc for burglary and illegal drug offense.
