City slashes scholarship grants from 99 to 34 By Maricar Aranas
RISING school fees has forced the City Government to slash the number of its scholars from 99 to 34 this school year.
Mayor Agustin Perdices said this after the signing of new scholarship contracts between the City Government and the grantees recently.
The mayor explained that the city was now spending P3,880 for each scholar for one semester every year while the scholarship budget was only P1.5 million.
Most of the scholars are on their upper years and studying at Negros Oriental State University.
Perdices lamented that though the City Government wanted to increase its number of scholars, it could not do anything because of the rising tuition fees.
He said the city would be able to add more slots if it received its estimated P12-14 million internal revenue allotment share.
