Education dep't warns students v. joining frats By Rachel M. Nessia
DEPARTMENT of Education Regional Director Carolino Mordeno warned public elementary and high school students against joining fraternities.
Mordeno said, in a directive to all school principals in the provinces of Cebu, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, and Bohol that those confirmed to be directly involved in the recruitment would be expelled from the school.
He reminded the principals about the department's policy against joining fraternities although he admitted that most recruiters were school outsiders.
As this developed the Philippine National Police (PNP) increased its presence near school premises to discourage recruitment.
Policemen have been tasked to ensure the safety of schoolchildren during the opening of classes last week.
"Increased visibility is not only meant to ward off the possible recruitment of new frat members but also secure the safety of the students," Erlina Comeros of the PNP regional office said in a separate directive to all provincial police command.
