No power rate cut in Negros Oriental
By Victor L. Camion

THE National Power Corporation (NPC) said the Visayas region is not included in the list of areas that would enjoy reduced power costs next month.

NPC Negros Oriental plant manager Rodolfo Pacaña clarified that the rate reduction in July is applicable only for Luzon and Mindanao consumers who get power supplies from hydrothermal plants.

Pacaña said the rate reduction coincides with the advent of the rainy season when hydrothermal plants receive abundant water pressure, which he said, would mean reduced operation costs.

Hydrothermal energy is the cheapest of electricity generation.

Pacaña said 24 percent of the country's power sources, is generation mix -- a combination of hydrothermal, geothermal, diesel, coal and gas turbine operation.

Pacaña said the Visayas region gets its power from generation mix.

He said Negros Oriental and Leyte produce geothermal energy through the Philippine National Oil Company while Falcon I and II in Naga, Cebu generate power by gas turbine. Iloilo, Panay, Bohol and Mactan produce power from diesel fuel.

Pacaña said geothermal energy generation is the cheapest, next to hydrothermal.

He assured that although the Visayas region is excluded from the power rate reduction, its consumers continue to enjoy lower rates compared to Luzon's.

Mindanao, however, enjoys the cheapest power rate.
