Chamber sees avian flu, volcanic movement as 'signs'
By Maricar Aranas

A TOP official of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) believed the movement of volcanoes in India, Turkey, Indonesia, and the Philippines and the upsurge of the dreaded Asian flu virus could be a signal from the environment that the world's natural resources are now overexploited.

PCCI president Donald Dee voiced the perception in last week's Visayas Business Area Conference in Dumaguete City.

Dee said the signals could be a warning for the business sector to prepare for eventualities because of their effects on human beings and the economy.

At present, he said, the Philippines is lucky because it has escaped the avian flu but this did not mean the country should let its guard down.

The PCCI, Dee said, was aware of both concerns and has prepared a program against the avian flu and the abnormal movement of volcanoes.

The June 15 to 17 Dumaguete conference attended by some 200 industry and business leaders City opened with a Trade Fair that showcased Negros Oriental's business potentials in tourism, education, agribusiness, and financing.

The affair was hosted by the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry headed by Ernesto Quiamco.
