Kanlaon exhibits 2 more steam-ash emissions By Syril G. Repe
KANLAON volcano exhibited two more episodes of steam-ash emissions Monday, which the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said are part of the volcano's period of low-level unrest.
Traces of the ashfall and presence of sulfuruous odor were reported in Barangay Cabagnaan, La Castellana in the Negros Occidental side.
Ben Tanatan of Phivolcs said the episodes followed one another from 3:56 p.m. to 4:24 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 5:55 p.m.
The steam ash-laden clouds reached up to 600 meters above the crater and drifted to the southwest.
Tanatan said the initial explosion was recorded by the Cabagnaan station with the duration of 13 minutes while the second one with a duration of one minute.
Seismic activity until Tuesday was generally at low level and weak to moderate steaming observed after the last explosion event subsided.
The volcano is rated at Alert Level 1, which means that the public is advised not to enter the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
"Sudden steam and ash explosions may impact this zone," Tanatan said.
In addition, he said, areas outside the permanent danger zone and gullies leading to the upper slopes should be avoided because lahar and rockfalls might affect these areas especially during heavy rains on the volcano's slopes.
