Fishing truck mishap; 5 killed, 28 injured

SIATON, Negros Oriental -- Five men died and 28 others were injured when the fishing truck bringing them to Sitio Tambobo in Barangay Bonbonon lost control of its brake and toppled over at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Killed on the spot were Roger Calago, 25, Jano Gorpi, 45, and Nicario Apilanio, 19, all of Barangay Alangilan, Sta. Catalina, and Samuel Jamin, 34, of Barangay Manalongon, Sta. Catalina.

Jaybee Borromeo, 25, of Alangilan, died two hours later in Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City.

The passengers, most of whom were either released after treatment the same day or detained for further checkup were: Ernesto Abraham, 42 (driver of the truck); Jose Badon, 27; Reynaldo Namoco, 28; Elvis Bernier, 42; Marcelo Balauro, 50; Ricardo Lajot, 43; Randy Namoco, 18; Daniel Sareņo, 19; Jessie Kilat, 20; Edgar Kilat, 21; Sammy Kilat, 18; Randy Alcano, 23; Denver Aquino, 20; Renato Jamin, 29; Alexander Ege, 20: Marlon Barredo, 31; Edgel Armentano, 23; Juvy Palomar, 33; Joe Marie Quinicot, 27; Lauencio Georpe, 36; Jonathan Kilat, 25; Sanny Kilat, 18; Wayland Quindo, 26; Rogelio Ordoņez, 52; Ronnie Aniņon, 31; and Danny Badon, 32.

The names of two other passengers were not immediately available.

Abraham said he was maneuvering the Super J fishing truck owned by Dodo Badon of Alangilan to a descending portion of the road to Tambobo when the vehicle's brake malfunctioned.

The truck lost control and swerved left, falling over and killing the four fishing crew on the spot. The 28 survivors were rushed to Siaton District Hospital for initial treatment before they were transferred to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.
