'100-year journey in faith and service' By Neil C. Rio
THE Dumaguete City United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) is celebrating its centennial.
Mindanao Jurisdiction UCCP Bishop Isaias Bingtan delivered the sermon during the 9 a.m. service on Sunday delving on the centennial theme of 100-Year Journey in Faith and Service.
A 100-voice choir will highlight the Sunday morning service.
Some of the activities starting July 7, include a Diana, motorcade and parade, opening worship, a banquet, and Pista sa Baryo that will feature games, picture and product exhibits and displays, among others.
The Dumaguete City UCCP, founded in 1906, traces its roots to the indigenous Philippine Methodist Church that later forged an organic union with four other mainline Protestant denominations to form the United Church of Christ in the Philippines in 1948.
One major centennial project the church is doing is the P1-million chancel renovation begun on June 12, 2006.
The project is expected to be finished within the year with more donations coming in.
Resident pastor Rev. Ed B. Samson and associate pastor Reverend Marlen Villaflor and the church council headed by Glynda T. Descuatan are leading the affair.
