1st Biofuels Lecture and Demonstration By Eli Manlangit
AWARE OF the rising cost of oil in the world market, the local government of Bayawan City has embarked on projects to look for alternative sources of fuels.
The chance meeting between City Mayor German Saraña and internationally-renowned biofuels researcher and developer Dr. Rico Cruz paved the way for the holding of the 1st Biofuels Lecture and Demonstration in Bayawan City.
The participants to the one-day activity were the key officials of the neighboring towns of Sta. Catalina and Siaton, businessmen, and students and professors of Negros Oriental State University (Norsu) Bayawan City-Sta. Catalina Campus.
Cruz discussed about the many benefits one can derive from using biofuels.
In his demonstration, the researcher impressed the participants with his "concoction" of coconut crude oil, ethanol, and a catalyst to come up with a biodiesel.
He said coconut crude oil could be substituted with used cooking oil and oil derived from jatropha curcas or tuba tuba or any other oil-producing polant.
During the demonstration, Cruz used biofuels on a cooking stove and the process emitted a pleasant smell, which was environment-friendly.
Because of the successful demonstration on the use of biofuel in one of the city government vehicles, Mayor Saraña announced that henceforth, diesel-using government vehicles would be converted to 50 percent biodiesel.
The mayor, in his message during the event, encouraged his people and those of neighboring municipalities to switch to biofuels.
