Jail security tightened
By Syril G. Repe

JAIL officials tightened security at the Dumaguete City jail in Barangay Bajumpandan following the killing of an acquitted illegal drug suspect just in front of the prison building a few minutes past 10 a.m. Sunday.

Jail warden Waldemar Villanueva said the measure is aimed at making sure that the inmates and their visitors are safe.

The victim, Romulo Tano Jr. of Lupa Colon extension, had just alighted from a multicab and was about to hand over his fare to the driver when a motorcycle with two riders suddenly appeared and the backrider fired at him several times, hitting the victim twice on the back.

After the shooting, the assailants escaped.

The victim was rushed to Holy Child Hospital but he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds more than an hour later.

Tano was visiting his imprisoned wife Rosemia when he was gunned down.

Investigators recovered three empty 9mm shells from the crime scene.

Eleazer Calinsing, driver of the multicab, said the attack was so sudden.

Inspector Errol Garchitorena, chief of the city police intelligence and investigation section, said the killing had the same pattern as those in the past.

The Regional Trial Court acquitted Tano and his wife Rosemia of illegal drug offense last June 16 because of technicality.

But Rosemia was held for another illegal drug charge.

Villanueva said the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is prepared to give security to the widow if the court allowed her to visit her dead husband.

Interviewed by the media minutes after the incident, Rosemia said her husband had no known enemies and had told her he would not return to selling illegal drugs after his acquittal.

She admitted that she had heard reports that her husband had been threatened after his release.

As this developed the city police force said it would strengthen its choke points, operation bakal, and street patrols.
