University to install new alert system By Maricar Aranas
ALARMED by the suicides of two students in May and last month, the Silliman University (SU) administration will introduce a new program on guidance and counseling at the guidance office.
SU president Dr. Ben Malayang III explained it would be difficult for the university to monitor its numerous students or project or stop anyone from committing suicide.
Malayang said the university could only do so much such as encouraging students to join school activities.
He said he would install three more guidance counselors and open a hotline number that any student could dial to talk to someone about his or her problem.
The SU president hoped the students would be enlightened not to take their own life when they have problems.
Malayang said his office is open anytime to accept any suggestion for the good of the university.
