Pamplona, Bais City public markets fail trade dep't search By Syril G. Repe
THE provincial selection team of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) gave a failing grade to Pamplona public market on the second round of their month long search for provincial winner of DTI's Pambansang Pamilihan award, saying it needs more improvement.
The second-round provincial selection team was composed of DTI's Jose Julio Somido, Adelina V. Balatayo, Esther Windler of the consumers group, Evonsueda Abbas of the Department of Agriculture, Irene Alviola of the Department of Interior and Local Government, and media representative Syril G. Repe of Sun.Star Dumaguete and radio station dyRM and Fil Lamberan of ABS-CBN.
The team found that the public market failed to comply with the law on the use of price tags, proper weighing scale, exhibit of a price board, the presence of a consumer welfare desk, a clean market surrounding including the presence of trash cans with garbage regularly disposed, clean comfort rooms with adequate water supply, and a market vendors association.
However, Beatriz Banlaygas, Pamplona municipal market officer-in-charge, welcomed the visit, saying the inspection helped them realize the need to comply with the laws.
"We are thankful that the DTI came up with this project so that we would know the law and at the same time the vendors would know their obligation," Banlaygas said.
Before Pamplona, the evaluators visited the public market of Bais City, but the same also failed to meet the positive assessment of the team.
The Tanjay City public market bested the two markets, which were visited that day, for passing the criteria of the evaluating team.
Tanjay City Mayor Baltazar Salma and City Administrator Reynaldo Teves who is also the market enterprise in-charge accompanied the evaluators as they inspected all stalls and stores inside the city's new public market.
