Pamplona heightens fight v. malnutrition By Victor L. Camion
PAMPLONA, Negros Oriental -- The Municipal Government has intensified its campaign against malnutrition not just for the award, but also for the health of every constituent.
Municipal nutrition officer Lilibeth Araco-Barba said Mayor Apolinario Arnaiz, Jr. was bent on eliminating malnutrition among his people.
"He (mayor) is very much concerned with the health status of his constituents," said Barba.
The administration, she said, has launched a massive food production program.
"Everybody believes that malnutrition is caused by lack of food," the nutrition officer said and because of this, Arnaiz was working to improve agricultural productions.
The town of Pamplona is one of the agricultural centers of Negros Oriental.
Barba said the municipality recently won a Green Banner Award for its outstanding and consistent performance to trim down the malnutrition rate in the last three consecutive years.
The award was given during the 2nd Nutrition Action Officers Congress and the 2006 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony at Grand Majestic Convention Center in Cebu City last July 31.
An evaluation conducted in the barangay health stations of San Isidro, Banawe, and Simborio showed that the municipality met all the criteria for the award.
The barangay health stations are manned by the rural health midwives Lenny Ybias, Prima Montecalvo, and Rosamond Ladion.
Barba added that Arnaiz, as chairman of the municipal nutrition committee, underscored the support of his department heads and agencies for the success of the program.
