Province to set up anti-trafficking task forces in 'hot spot' areas By Jennifer Catan-Tilos
THE Provincial Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (Iacat) will put up task forces in different ports of Negros Oriental to intensify its drive against trafficking in persons.
In its recent meeting, the council agreed on the urgent need to assign task forces in the province's entry and access points because of incidents of trafficking in these routes.
Negros Oriental has been identified as a trafficking hotspot in the country and one of the major recruitment grounds for victims and potential trafficking of people.
Vic Abedesco, coordinator of the Visayas Forum Foundation Inc., said that because of its image, the province has a strategic role to play in the anti-trafficking initiatives in the country.
The provincial Iacat was formed last April after the Provincial Board enacted Ordinance 14 that created the council to coordinate all efforts to combat trafficking in Negros Oriental.
The resolution to Ordinance 14 said because of the numerous cases of trafficking in persons in the province, it is "imperative to ensure stronger and more effective coordination of efforts among agencies and stakeholders."
The council is tasked to take steps to prevent trafficking in the province, rescue and recover victims, cause the prosecution of offenders, and ensure the healing and effective reintegration of trafficking victims in Negros Oriental.
