By Syril G. Repe

AYUNGON, Negros Oriental -- A couple who waylaid and shot a farmer and his son were hacked to death by another son of the victim in a violent encounter Monday afternoon in Barangay Mabato.

Slain were couple Rudy and Shirlita Maningo, of Mabato.

The farmer that the couple shot was identified as Baldomero Alunan and Danilo Alunan, 23, both farmers from Sitio Calatagan, Barangay Nalundan, Bindoy.

Another son of the farmer victim (name withheld), 17-years-old, escaped uninjured and attacked the couple with a bolo in retaliation for shooting his father and his brother.

A police report from Ayungon said the farmer and his two sons were walking on an isolated road in Mabato when the couple appeared, allegedly in ambush.

Without any provocation, Rudy shot Baldomero first, hitting him on the right thigh, and then Danilo, wounding him on the right leg.

The younger son, however, fought back and lashed at Maningo with a long bolo several times.

Rudy's wife attempted to stab the boy with a knife but he was too quick and hacked the woman, hitting her several times, causing her instant death.

After the encounter, the boy surrendered to Barangay councilman Vedasto Morales in Sitio Calatagan and turned over a .357 caliber gun and five spent shells he recovered at the scene of the attack.

His father and brother were rushed to Bindoy District Hospital.

Morales turned over the boy to the Bindoy police station 2:30 Tuesday morning.
