Reyes tells lawmakers to give funds for landfill By Victor L. Camion
ENVIRONMENT Secretary Angelo Reyes urged lawmakers in Negros Oriental to allocate funds to build sanitary landfills.
Reyes, who was in Dumaguete City, admitted that many municipalities and cities do not have money.
"If they have money they have other priorities," said Reyes adding, "So, hindi nabibigyan ng much attention yan (sanitary landfill)."
Reyes said building a sanitary landfill involves a lot of money estimated at P20 million per hectare.
The most expensive to buy and install is the high-density polyethylene liner to put under the landfill.
The liner is necessary to prevent toxic wastes from merging with the underground sources of water.
Reyes said that if a municipality could not build a landfill alone, officials should cluster themselves and request their congressman to help.
"So, hindi na sila mahihirapan sa funding," the secretary said.
Reyes echoed opinions that there was no need to build an expensive sanitary landfill to comply with Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
"Kahit maliit basta kasya sa pangangailangan," he said adding, "Kung ang lupa ay government owned e di lalong makatipid."
