City barangays start 'profiling' residents By Maricar Aranas
BARANGAY officials have started updating the profiles of their population as part of measures to monitor new faces in the community.
The move was triggered by the rape of a 14-year-old high school student in Candau-ay last August 29 by a transient resident from Bais City.
The profiling would include the number of people living and their records in each barangay to identify new faces and transients.
Mayor Agustin Perdices, in introducing the measure right after the rape-slay of the schoolgirl, clarified that not all transients or evacuees might be involved in any crime, but that their background or family profile should be checked for security purposes.
Perdices reiterated his suggestion at the meeting of the League of Barangays in his office, a few days after the Candau-ay incident.
Harrison Gonzales, barangay chief of Tinago, said the profiling and updating of barangay population records would be helpful to the people of Dumaguete City.
Barangay chief Bert Aquino of Bantayan, who is a member of the non-government organization St. Catherine, offered his group's help to do the profiling.
Aquino suggested that all barangays must be fitted with Internet connections for easy access to information.
Gonzales asked the mayor to set aside a small amount from the internal revenue allotment to buy computer units for barangays that do not have any.
