Key crimes up 208% from July 25-September 19

INDEX or key crimes in Dumaguete City soared to 208 percent from 12 in July 25 to August 18 to 37 in August 18 to September 19, based on figures from the peace and order update of the police.

Key crimes are those involving crimes against persons and properties.

Except for the seven murders committed during the two periods, all other index cases from August 18 to September 19 were solved "100 percent." These include a homicide case, three rapes, 15 physical injuries, two hold-ups involving three people, and eight thefts.

Non-index crimes that cover the violation of special laws went up from 4 to 24, all of which were declared "100 percent" solved.

The special laws violated were those on illegal drugs, illegal gambling, illegal possession of firearms, and rugby sniffing among others.

Police crime statistics covering the whole month of September showed a total index crime of 35 and 40 non-index crimes with an almost 90 percent crime solution efficiency.

Nevertheless, police chief Dionardo Carlos said the general situation in the city remains "peaceful and manageable."

Carlos said despite the series of vigilante-style killings in the past months, the police managed to make gains.

"The gains (in the peace and order arena) were made possible by a combination of focus strategy, unrelenting police presence and a vigilant citizenry," Carlos said.

He said that for the period covered by the status report, the city remained conducive to business, trade, and educational pursuits.

The police chief said the peace and order situation was not "greatly affected" by the shooting incidents.

"The victims are known criminal personalities mostly drug personalities, hold-uppers, snatchers, and burglars," Carlos explained.

He said the police enjoy the cooperation of the community.

"The partnership is vital in the prevention of crime and its solution," the police chief stressed. (SGR)
