Cops told: Be neutral on May '07 polls
By Victor L. Camion

GOVERNOR George Arnaiz appealed to policemen to be neutral to other politicians, especially during campaign period.

The appeal was aired during the New Year's courtesy call of the local police to the governor and members of the Provincial Board in Negros Oriental held recently at Macias Sports and Cultural Center lobby.

All chiefs of police in the 20 towns and five cities in the province, headed by Police Provincial Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe, attended the event.

"You might give us favors since we are friends," said Arnaiz.

The governor stressed that in some areas of the country, policemen usually give special treatment to their friend politicians.

Arnaiz admitted that incumbent officials extended assistance to the police needs, but that such is an obligation of the local officials.

"That is our obligation to help the police so that you will become effective against bad elements to maintain the peace and order," he said.

The governor meanwhile extended his thanks to policemen who religiously serve their best to the province.

"A zero crime is impossible. But at least, you do better this year," Arnaiz said.

For his part, Buenafe assured that policemen in Negros Oriental are neutral and apolitical.

"That is what our police do -- to be fair to everyone, not just to government officials but also to ordinary citizens," said Buenafe.

Buenafe assured that there will be a reshuffle in some chief of police for delicadeza sake.

He added that some chief of police will be relieved from their post and instead assigned at the police provincial office in Camp Fernandez, Agan-an, Sibulan.
