700 dog bite cases in N. Oriental

ONE person died of rabies in Negros Oriental while a total of 700 dog bite cases have been recorded in the city as of July this year.

The victim was from North Poblacion, Jimalalud town.

Last year, two rabies-caused deaths were recorded, based on records from the Provincial Veterinary Office presented during the Mid-Year Evaluation and Assessment of the province’s rabies eradication program held August 14.

Records show that of the total 86,028 dog population in the province, only 18,697 have so far been vaccinated.

Dumaguete City holds the biggest dog population with 11,483, of which only 2,675 have been vaccinated this year.

Other areas with notable dog population in the province are: Bais City with 5,771; Bayawan City, 5,000; and Siaton, 4,500.

Bais City vaccinated the most number of dogs with 56.71 percent accomplishment.

Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Antonio Mutia said he is confident that the province will reach its 80 percent target vaccination accomplishment of the total dog population by the end of this year.
