Thursday, August 30, 2007 Farmers’ cooperative to engage in cotton production By Edmund Sestoso
A FEDERATION of farmers’ cooperatives in Bayawan City had planned to engage in massive cotton production aside from their base of operation, also at nearby towns, said Jessie Montano, chairman of group called Bayawan Multi-purpose Agricultural Kilusang Bayan (BMAKB).
Montano identified the areas of expansion for their cotton production. These are in Basay, Siaton, and Guihulngan, all of Negros Oriental and Hinobaan and Sipalay in Negros Occidental.
He said in order to realize their business expansion, the Cooperative staff and officers will be doing field works together with the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) in the continuous education of the target areas to get the farmers wholehearted support and involvement.
The 5,000-strong federation also plans to engage in the production of banana known as “Bolongan,” which will include purchasing and packaging.
The group has also been getting enough financial support from the local government unit, several non-government organizations both from local, national, and international level.
