FU to celebrate ‘Peace One Day’

FOUNDATION University (FU), in cooperation with the City Government of Dumaguete and the Dumaguete Roadrunners Club, will celebrate the international day of peace on September 23, 2007 dubbed as “Peace One Day.”

The “Peace One Day” celebration is initiated by FU’s Institute of Youth Sports for Peace (IYSPeace) under the auspices of the former Philippine Sports Commissioner Dr. Aparicio Mequi.

There will be an essay writing contest for college students and debate for high school pupils with a theme on peace.

A peace rally and a three-kilometer peace walk cum competitive road races will be held on September 23, which would commence from the Rizal Park at 5 a.m. wherein about 3,000 participants are expected to attend.

Ecumenical prayers will be recited by representatives from Catholic, Protestants, Islam, Iglesia ni Cristo, and other religious denominations.

Reverend Cobby Palm of the Silliman University Center for Justice and Peace has been invited to deliver an inspirational message with Dr. Mira D. Sinco, President of Foundation University, giving the welcome address.

Lighting of peace candles with the singing of St. Francis of Assisi’s “Let Me Be a Channel of Your Peace,” “Heal the World,” and “Let There be Peace on Earth” will highlight the Peace One Day Activity.

The peace fun walk around the city will follow, which has several race categories: 3-k for children below 12 years old and children with disabilities, 5k for teens ages 13-16, and the open competition for 16-years old and above.

Participants may register at the IYSPeace office at the North Campus Gymnasium of FU, Locsin Street, Dumaguete City, starting this week up to Sunday at the events proper.

Sacks of rice and certificates in support to the Asia Rice Foundation’s “Rice is Life” campaign will be awarded to the winners.
