Friday, October 12, 2007 Police: public must do hard to target thieves By Syril G. Repe
NEGROS Oriental Police Director Melvin Buenafe pledged to do everything in order to prevent bad elements from doing their operation in the province of Negros Oriental.
He urged public to be vigilant especially in the city of Dumaguete after series of crimes in the streets were reported such as hold-up, snatching, and the alarming number of burglaries.
Buenafe advised house owners to secure their premises by putting up window grills, alarm devices, perimeter fence, and putting lights outside their surroundings.
Dumaguete Chief of Police Superintendent Dionardo Carlos gave assurance to solve the crimes, saying some criminals were arrested and put to jail.
But, he called on all residents to take part and continue supporting the police by giving information when crimes happened in their area of concern.
He said the city’s police station has only 86 personnel, which are not enough to protect the swollen population.
But Carlos said the police are intensifying its efforts to continue their program of educating the community and also their effort to prevent the crimes even of meager resources and manpower.
