Fiesta events gear towards sports tourism

THE Dumaguete City 2007 Fiesta Executive Committee is gearing up its activities towards promoting the “sports tourism” of the city, lining up more sports activities for the entire celebration.

Dumaguete City Councilor Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarrbaria, Fiesta 2007 Convener, said this in a press conference held Monday morning at the City Hall’s session hall.

He said this is what they arrived at in a meeting with the members of the Fiesta Executive Committee recently considering its prime potential for the government.

The almost a month-long activities was opened with a Children’s Football Friendly Games last Saturday at the Quezon Park Ball Field.

The Fiesta Open Invitational Basketball Tournament that followed was played both at the City High Gym and at the City Quadrangle.

Last Sunday morning, Fiesta Fun Run kicked off with the competitive categories of 3 and 5 kilometers.

At 8 a.m. of November 11, a four man-team Paddle Banca Race will tow racers along the Rizal Boulevard.

Topseeded local and international cue artists along with selected players will see action On November 13 to 17 via the 1st Negros Oriental International 9 Ball Tournament at the Negros Oriental Convention Center.

“Operation Daguit” and Airsoft Invitational Game will soar from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Dumaguete City High School on November 1 and 18.

On the same dates, Dumaguete Open Badminton Challenge will open at The Court in Hypermart Complex.

Sandurot Mountain Bike Race will spin at around 7 a.m. of November 18.

Sports Coordinator Joe Quirit also said there is a “Dula sa Plaza” where ordinary folks from different barangays will take center stage and will have their own barrio games played right at the center of the city.

On November 19, Todo/Juego GUD Trading Volleyball Men will wallop in the fields of the city.

On Tuesday will also be the Fiesta Open Volleyball Tournament at the City Quadrangle.

Dumaguete City’s 59th Charter Anniversary falls on November 24 where the Dumaguete Fiesta Half Marathon will be held at around 5 a.m. to be held and finished at the Kiwanis stage.

On the same day, Fiesta Co-Convener Marina Mendoza said there will be Children’s Fiesta Games.

On November 25, which is the fiesta date, there will be a Kawasaki-GUD Trading Banca Ralli and in the afternoon of the same day there will be a Water Sports Exhibition sponsored by Shell Philippines.

Councilor Sagarrbaria said sports activities has many positive inputs for the fiesta and Charter day celebration especially in the promotions of the city as a wholesome place to go, aside from being the capital of one of the world’s famous places as listed in an international magazine.
