Sunday, December 02, 2007 Guv to officials: guide SK By Edmund B. Sestoso
NEGROS Oriental Governor Emilio Macias II has asked barangay officials to guide their respective youth leaders who are at the helm of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) as chairman and youth councilors.
He urged the SK officials to initiate long-term projects that have an impact on the values formation of their fellow youth. These projects should also be very significant and relevant to society.
The governor stressed that it is high time for the youth officials to execute their duties and serve as the voice of the youth.
Some lawmakers have been advocating for the abolition of the SK claiming that the youth structure no longer serves the interest it was intended to.
Second District Representative George Arnaiz, who is in favor of junking the SK, said the youth are already represented in the regular elections with many young officials carrying their interests.
Macias stressed that the young politicians should therefore now refrain from asking sports equipment but should instead initiate relevant activities like bloodletting and other civic activities that will help the youth in the barangays.
The SK is the forerunner of the Kabataang Barangay during the term of then dictator President Ferdinand Marcos whose eldest daughter, Imee Marcos, had served as the first federation president in the country.
The SK has a 10 percent share from the economic development fund.
Macias reminded them to spend their budget into pertinent and appropriate projects in their respective barangays.
