Thursday, January 31, 2008 SU warns public of e-mail scam v. board chair By Edmund B. Sestoso
THE management and administration of Silliman University (SU) has warned the public against the ongoing e-mail scam targeting the university Board of Trustees chairperson.
Mark Raygan Garcia, director of the SU Office of Information and Publications, explained there is an e-mail going around saying that SU Board of Trustees chair Leonor Briones is stranded in Nigeria and that US$3,000 is needed to transport her back to the country.
"This is not true, this e-mail is a scam," explained Garcia in a text message he sent to media outlets.
According to Garcia, Briones is in Metro Manila attending to an official business in relation to her work in the university.
Briones was once the national treasurer during the administration of deposed President Joseph Estrada.
She was once connected with the Freedom from Debt Coalition, a non-government organization advocating for debt renegotiation and fair treatment in the country's lending capability.
