Tuesday, March 11, 2008 Lawmaker pushes for yellow corn production
NEGROS Oriental 2nd District Representative George Arnaiz urged farmers to aggressively pursue the production of yellow corn in the province with the increase in demand for the product both here and abroad.
According to Representative Arnaiz, the supply of yellow corn in the world market has decreased.
He said the United States of America (USA) no longer exports yellow corn to other countries including the Philippines.
Yellow corn, Arnaix explained, is changed into bio-ethanol, an alternative fuel source, because of the continuous rise in the prices of fuel and petroleum products.
Arnaiz also said there are still lots of vacant areas in the province that could be utilized for planting yellow corn.
Yellow corn is also one of the ingredients in hog feeds.
He said that because of the increasing demand for yellow corn, the price of hog feeds is also going up resulting in higher prices of pork in the market.
The congressman assured the second district that he will do all he can to get funding from the national office of the Department of Agriculture for farmers who would wish to plant yellow corn.
The legislator asked farmers in the whole province, not just his district, to plant yellow corn.
