Apartment thief mauled by bystanders

A MARRIED man ended up at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) after he was mauled for stealing a wristwatch, a cellphone, and a wallet inside an apartment along Dr. V. Locsin Street at Tuesday dawn.

Police identified the victim as Cyril Aristela, of legal age, and a resident of Barangay Junod.

John Allan Pinas, 32, married, temporarily renting in Fax apartment, told police he woke up for his daily routine and chanced upon the suspect hurriedly leaving the apartment.

Upon checking his belongings, Pinas said he noticed that his wristwatch worth P50,000, Nokia N70 cellphone, and his wallet with cash of P2,000, ATM card, and credit card were missing.

Pinas hurriedly went out from the apartment and shouted for the man to stop but Aristela continued running. Pinas alerted bystanders who chased the suspect and cornered him.

Barangay captain Gregorio Suasin Jr. of Barangay Taclobo, together with his barangay tanod, also responded and turned over the suspect to the Dumaguete City Police Office.

All the stolen items were recovered.

The suspect was brought to the hospital for the physical injuries he got from the beatings. He was then turned over to the police. (SGR)
