Wednesday, March 12, 2008 New cop chief vows low crime rate
NEWLY installed Dumaguete City Police Chief Leopoldo Cabanag pledged Tuesday to lower the crime rate and continue the program to maintain peace and order started by his predecessor Dionardo Carlos.
The turnover of command of the Dumaguete City Police Office was done in simple ceremonies Tuesday at the police station.
Provincial Police Director Melvin Buenafe, Mayor Agustin Perdices, Vice Mayor Wodrow Maquiling, city councilors, the business community, religious group, non-government organizations, and members of the local media were present during the turnover ceremony.
Cabanag said he would also focus on solving the series of still unsolved killings in the city.
He also said he is hopeful he would have the support and cooperation of the community.
Mayor Perdices thanked Carlos for a job well done. He also said he hoped Carlos will return to serve again the people of Dumaguete and the province.
The mayor as well hoped that Cabanag would do what the former chief did in strengthening the campaign to maintain peace and order.
Carlos disclosed that his men arrested 203 wanted men in his two years of service from March 6, 2006 to March 11, 2008.
Record shows that in 2003, a total of 145 were arrested for illegal drugs, 57 for illegal gambling, 32 for illegal possession of firearms, 13 for carnaping, two for cattle rustling, among others. (Syril G. Repe)
